I deleted your question because I think it is too detailed. I will say that I think it is fine to make assumptions as long as you document them.

I did this assignment. I actually think they'll purpose of the exam is to spot things that need to be considered that don't have a specific answer.
The technology choices, patterns etc are all pretty straight forward.

what makes the assignment challenging is to see how well you can communicate your opinions regarding the matters that aren't clear in the spec.
