what do you think is the best workflow engine existing and that has a web frontend or can be integrated by Java calls?

You can have a look at JBPM - www.jboss.org/jbpm

I agree. Here's the link: http://ej-technologies/jprofiler - if it wasn't for jprofiler, we would need to run our stuff on 16 servers instead of 3.
