Did you check the BookReviews in the BunkHouse? That's the first place to start with.
But as suggested for everyone and by most of them- Head First java is a really good book for beginners in Java.

Now, as per your query, I would recommend the Java: "A Beginner's Guide" or, "Java: The Complete Reference" by Hebert Schildt. For later studies, its best if you start Googling your queries, and we at JavaRanch are certainly here to help. Hope this helps.

Head First Java...in fact the complete series is awesome...if you are a beginner...no way you can get better book than it.
Regarding database "Korth" is considered as Bible. However, it will be a bit cumbersome, if you are a beginner. Look for the DB in which you want to work. Go for their official manuals.. enjoy coding

Mysql and postgres are the most popular two free ones. I prefer postgres, but both are fine.

From the realms outside open source, Oracle XE and MS SQL Server Express can be used freely too.
