To read this book, do we need any background in geometry?
What kind of various applications can come up using postGIS?

Not sure where the authors are, so I'll reply in the meantime. You might like to check out the following books for a rapid introduction to open source GIS:

GIS for Web Developers by Scott Davis
Desktop GIS by Gary Sherman.

Either of these books will give you a good understanding of what spatial data processing is all about, and how people use these tools.

Also check out the PostGIS website for examples of how people are using PostGIS.

I agree. Here's the link: http://ej-technologies/jprofiler - if it wasn't for jprofiler, we would need to run our stuff on 16 servers instead of 3.
