Ideally I'd rather do the assigmnent first, then go back and do part the part 1 exam leveraging lessons learnt. Anyone done it in that order?

Did you mean to ask about the Sequence of Part 2 and Part 3 exams?
Because successful qualification of Part 1 is a pre requisite to receive the assignment for Part 2.
