Hi,
I am currently studying for the SCEA/OCMJEA part 1 and was wondering which patterns are essential to know? I have read a few books on the subject and it seems there are some pretty obscure ones out there so I don't want to waste my time studying patterns which are not relevant. Is there a published list somewhere?
Thanks
Willy

If it's in GoF, it's essential to know.
If it's in Alur/Crupi/Malks and hasn't been superseded by framework evolution, it's essential to know.
If it's in neither of those sources and isn't reducible to a pattern that satisfies the previous two criteria, then you can skip it.

The Cade/Sheil book's list seemed accurate to me. At least, I didn't get asked any patterns they didn't talk about.

And to pin that down: they list all 23 from GoF and all 21 from Alur et al.

The most important are JEE Design Patterns Most of Part I questions are about them.

I referred to Real World JEE Patterns book by Adam Bien mentioned in my blog:

How are the questions in part 1 that relate to patterns structured? Do they present a description of a problem and a list of patterns that fit the problem or is there an UML diagram that you have to identify as a pattern?

When i appeared for SCEA5-part 1 way back in March 2009-I couldn't find any questions on patterns with UML. They could be of any nature, like:
1) Given a scenario-which pattern will be best fit.
2) Difference between two patterns
3) Principal on which a given pattern depends upon
They don't expect you to memorize the patterns but test you in terms of whether you understood the pattern really well or not?
