Suggestions for using LDAP

So I see Spring has an LDAP solution, but we are not using Spring for any thing else. Is it possible, or does it make sense, to just use the Spring solution for this one small piece of my application?
I am running Websphere v6, but when I look for documentation about WAS supporting LDAP I get all sorts of documents which talk about setting up LDAP using WAS. My company already has LDAP running, I need to pick a way of using it. So all of this WAS documentation just confuses me, as I don't know how to use WAS to access LDAP which is not implemented as part of WAS.
Are there other libraries or common solutions which I should look at? Or should I just write the Java from scratch, as that might be the best solution for getting this feature into my application.
TIA

Please ignore post, I have no idea what I am talking about.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
