Signed Applets unable to gain port access on client

Hi,
I have developed an applet, signed it, loaded it on a web application on JBoss.
When the page is loaded on client browser, it prompts for access permission.
Once accepted by user, the UI of applet appears on the screen. So far everything works good.
But the applet is supposed to capture the biometric information of user via LPT/USB port which it cannot do. There are no errors thrown but it just doesn't do anything.
I have not updated java.policy file. How do I have my applet gain information from client's port?
By the way, this applet works fine on server machine - including the port access so I am assuming everything is right with applet code.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
