What is meant by the word "managed" in the following quote from Wikipedia:

Enterprise JavaBeans is a managed, server-side component architecture for modular construction of enterprise applications.

Is it referring to memory management?

No, it's referring to the fact that they are components which are managed by a container in which they reside. The inference is that EJBs are created and controlled by that container rather than by any of the enterprise applications which might be running inside the container.
