Monitoring JServ process

Currently, the existing JServ Health process is a shell script that attempts to access ACE using URL.
The "health" of of the application is then interpeted from the response time of this URL.

Please let me know about other methods available that might help to detrmine JServ Health.
Can we feed a URL request to the JServ processes ?
