<FORM ACTION="/servlet/FooServlet" ENCTYPE="multipart/form-data" METHOD=POST> What is your name? <INPUT TYPE=TEXT NAME='submitter'><br> What file are you sending? <INPUT TYPE=FILE NAME=secretDocument><br> <input type="submit" value=Submit><br> </FORM>
I cannot read the submitter using request.getParameter("submitter") (it returns null). ]

Are you using a library to deal with the multipart "part"?
is very commonly used to separate the file upload form the plain text parameters.
