When I look at the doc for something like Integer, at the top of the page I see ...

java.lang.Object
+--java.lang.Number
+--java.lang.Integer

What is the "+--" telling me?

Also I think the three statements are telling me that Integer extends Number which extends Object - is that correct?

Alternatively, the doc for HashMap shows ...

java.lang.Object
java.util.AbstractMap
java.util.HashMap

with the little angle doo-hickey in front of lines 2 and 3. What's the little angle doo-hickey telling me?

Thanks!

Yes. That is correct.

Same idea ... that HashMap extends AbstractMap and that AbstractMap extends Object.

The javadoc for both classes looks the same to me ... I'm not sure why you're seeing pluses for one and something else for the other.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
