Catalina: IllegalStateException

Hi all I was just going through the stuff once again and decided to do it the HeadFirst Way so chose the to implement the listener mechanism to an old book example and got this error ...

FAIL - Encountered exception java.lang.IllegalStateException: Container org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/Beer-v1] has not been started

on adding the following lines to the web.xml file

	<listener>
		<listener-class>
			com.example.MyServletContextListener
		</listener-class>
	</listener>
	

this is the listener class

package com.example;

import javax.servlet.*;
import com.example.model.*;

class MyServletContextListener implements ServletContextListener{
	public void contextInitialized(ServletContextEvent event){
	ServletContext sc = event.getServletContext();
	String beerColor = sc.getInitParameter("contextColor");
	BeerExpert be = new BeerExpert(beerColor);
	sc.setAttribute("special", be);
	}
	
	public void contextDestroyed(ServletContextEvent event){
	}
}

!!! got the error ... !!!

had to mark the listener class as public ...
