I don't know how to change an MS Word document into a read-only document automatically when it is downloaded. Frankly, I don't understand why you are concerned about making it read-only. The document the user receives in the download is a copy, not the original. The users can change it all they like, and it still won't affect the original.

If you still need to make it read-only, I'd suggest looking at the apache POI project. This project provides an API for manipulating Microsoft format files. Check out the documentation, and you may find a way to do what you need to do.

Please do not cross-post the same question in multiple forums. It wastes people's time when multiple redundant conversations take place.
