I was reading Jeanne's post at http://www.selikoff.net/2011/06/26/eclipse-3-7-on-the-new-mac-8-good-features-1-bad-my-plugin-list/ which took me to http://osxdaily.com/2009/09/07/how-to-tell-if-youre-running-the-32-bit-or-64-bit-kernel-in-mac-os-x-snow-leopard/

I got Snow Leopard on my Mac book. So I ran the uname -a and got the 32 bit. I also confirmed it in Mac->About this Mac->More info->Software. The 64-bit Kernel and Extensions is set to No
I tried rebooting holding down 6 and 4. No change.

1) Should I even bother about this? Would I get any noticable performance benefits if I did?
2) All this time I have been downloading and using the 64 bit versions (e.g. Eclipse) How come they are working?
3) If I let it be, would I ever run into problems running any apps? Are there any apps which run only on 64 bit?
4) If you got Snow Leopard, which kernel version does it show?

In the second link it has comments answering your actual questions.

A 64 bit app can run in 32 bit kernels. Just runs like it was the 32 bit version.

I have Snow Leopard running the 32 bit version.

I've read that OS X Lion is 64-bit only. It will not run on older Macs that have a 32-bit only CPU (for example, older MacBooks with a Core Duo instead of a Core 2 Duo CPU).
