Got the book, which was highly recommended, but it covers java 5. I'm a beginner; is it of any use? Any help is appreciated

What has this to do with Java FX? Or did you just post in the wrong forum?
Assuming the latter, the Head First series is generally hailed as exemplary. The changes from Java 5 to 6 are minimal and can be looked up once you've grasped the basics.

Didn't know if Java FX was the right topic match. Apparently is not. Many Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Moving this to BJ as this has nothing to do with JavaFX.

Yes. It is definitely of use. If you have no experience with Java and are starting with the basics, there is little (if any) difference.

Just got the book myself, I have java 7, worked through the first couple chapters. Pretty good stuff imo, everything works.
