Hi Vinil, welcome to CodeRanch!

First you need to decide what kind of application you want to develop. Think of the parts this application consists of, and cut them up into small problems you can deal with.
If you get stuck somewhere, let us know your problem, and don't forget to TellTheDetails.

Like Stephan mentioned, have you decided what kind of application do you wish to develop? What functionality would it have? Would it be a stand alone application or distributed? How would the user interact with it? Command line? Stand alone GUI? Web based GUI?

These are the basics which you need to get sorted out first before even writing a single line of code.

Start at the Oracle Java Tutorials or get a book like Head First Java and start learning.

It doesn't really work that way. You learn from *doing* projects. If you're afraid of doing projects because you think you don't know enough, you're not going to learn.

If you start with a project, and you run into a dead end, that's a great opportunity for you to figure out how to solve the problem, and consequently you'll learn.
