Connecting VisualVm with remote host

I need to monitor memory usage of a process running on a remote host with visualvm.I'm following steps as mentioned in http://visualvm.java.net/applications_remote.html.But when starting jstatd i'm having following error

Could not create remote object

Along with that please tell me the diffrence between monitoring and profiling.And plese tell me what is heap dump and thread dump.
