web.xml security constraint won't work with roles

hi i've defined a security constraint in my web.xml file looking like this

<login-config> <auth-method>BASIC</auth-method> <realm-name>Please login to acces the fileuploader</realm-name> </login-config> <security-role> <description>Test dept.</description> <role-name>test</role-name> </security-role> <security-constraint> <web-resource-collection> <web-resource-name>Protected Area</web-resource-name> <url-pattern>/JSP/*</url-pattern> </web-resource-collection> <auth-constraint> <role-name>test</role-name> </auth-constraint> </security-constraint>

i get a connection to the database and i'm able to login if i comment out the auth-constraint element but otherwise I can't login,
I've checked in my database if i set up the correct role for my user and it has so can anyone help me out please
