Learning Java?

Hello everyone!

I am curious. Will learning java help me understand other languages easier? I am a beginning college student so I decided to take a step ahead and learn Java to pursue a programming career.
I will still learn Java regardless but I just want to know what to expect when I enroll in different programming classes. I plan to exercise Java while I complete my general education.

Thanks for reading
