Got lost in the middle of college. I'm interested in careers in programming

My long term goals is to get a BS in Computer Science.

My dream is to design video games.

My hobby during these times of unemployment is to learn about Java.

My questions are:
- How much do I need to know before looking for job involving programming? How much Java do I need to know? Should I learn another language like C++?
- Is it possible to land a job using what I've learn and will learn in Java. Any job? That CS degree won't be in my hands for years to come. And I need a job now.

There are a lot of employers out there looking for entry-level students. There is no such thing as "how much C++/Java I have to learn", because every employer has it's requests, but of course, if you're getting involved in a real project, your skills shoulb be beyond the basics (look for frameworks, design patterns etc). For designing games, Java won't help too much, so yes, C++/C# would be a better approach (also read about GDK, DirectX/OpenGL etc). So just look for job offers, send CVs/recommendation letters and wait for the interview to give your shot.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
