Mysql administration

I know this is not the post but hoping to get an answer since the guys at mysql forums are too busy

I have a windows box and installed mysql through the no install zip archive.

Problem is the root user has no grant priveleges or priveleges to create a new user or a database. Now how do i create a database? Is there something wrong with the zip archive? I have tried 5.6 and 5.1.

Also tried GRANT ALL ON *.* to <root-user> with GRANT OPTION;
I get access denied.

Have read the mysql guide for causes of the errors, nothing seems to work.
