Stop sending me promo emails please

I have gone to My Profile -> Preferences and checked the "No" radio button for "May JavaRanch send you occasional email notices...." many months ago and still I receive promo emails (which are little more than spam).

I would ideally like to completely remove my account from this website since I have not been able to stop the promo emails for many months, and have not been able to find a way to remove my account. I find this almost insulting and it makes me think this site is nothing but a spam machine (sorry to be rude, I'm sure everyone here is super friendly, but stopping automated emails and removing an account should be EASILY accessible options for any website that requires registration).

Can someone please help me? GET ME OFF THIS WEBSITE!!!

BTW I find this explanation to be completely unacceptable. JavaRanch is holding my personal information (my username and password if nothing else), and it is not only the REASONABLE thing to do, but the ETHICAL thing to do to allow that person to remove their information from your databases. If that requires you write some code to search the forums for my posts and remove them, then that's your problem, not mine. I understand that there can be references to "ex-users" in other posts, but if that's the best you can reasonably do, then you should at least provide that option (i.e., remove my account, delete my posts, and leave the references - or, if that's too hard, remove my account and keep my posts and references to my posts, WITH my username, but delete my account information!)

This is a problem that has been encountered by virtually every forum-type website in existence, and many have found reasonable ways to allow account deletion. Giving a lengthy explanation about why you're unable to do it is like spitting in my face.

I have nothing against keeping my posts on the site, even with my username attached to it. But I want my personal information (my account, including my email address) out of your databases.

If you can't grant me that courtesy, then for pete's sake fix the bug you have with the radio button in preferences to stop the spam.

Hmm, that would be a bug if that's how it's behaving. But I would have expected many more complaints if such a basic thing was broken. Can you tell us which emails you have received (after setting that radio button to "No") and how many of those? Just trying to figure out what might be wrong.

I tried to unsubscribe at least 6 months ago. I have received a lot of emails in that time, probably 20+, but I've stopped paying attention since it's just annoying me at this point (probably obvious).

On Oct. 3, I received an email titled "October JavaRanch Journal." Here are the first few lines of the email:

The CodeRanch Journal October 2011

Our lowest price ever! Get an entire year of Java training and reference from LearnNowJava for half-price… just $49.99!

And the last few lines, which after navigating thru a few links, tells me to unsubscribe through My Profile -> Preferences as I previously mentioned:

All this, and much, much, more, on

Let's be honest. This is spam.

Anthony (not that you're around to read this, but...) the reason you were still getting emails is because you somehow managed to register twice in succession. One account had email turned off, the other still had it turned on. Both seemed to have the same userid and the same display name, but one was never fully activated. I can't tell if this was a bug in the forum software, or whether it was something you did deliberately, but I'll look into it.

For anyone reading this in the future:
If you have problems unsubscribing just reply to the e-mail and a human would see it. Ideally with the word unsubscribe in it.
