JSF Life-cycle question

I have an outputText that has its rendered attribute pointed to a method in a backing bean:I have a System.out.println() being called in this method so I can see when it is called. Now since it is a method shouldn't it be called once in the Invoke Application phase? In my log I see it being called 7 times on a postback.
