Retain selected content in a drop down menu

Hello all. I am writing a portlet application. I have a drop down menu of states. After clicking on an item, the portlet will process the info and display the next portlet beneath it.
However, I need the content of that drop down menu selected in my next page.

Is there anyway we could retreive the selected content of a drop down menu in a jsp after clicking the submit button.
