eclipse decorator question

I am writing an eclipse decorator, i would like it to decorate the packages and projects like the compile error one does.
I have a very slow plan to do this (for each folder rescource check to the bottom of the tree and find appropriate files).
I am sure this isn't how it is done.

So i have 2 questions
1, what is the proper name for this type of decorator so i can search google effectivly (it doesn't appear to be cascading)
2, any hints how to do it please.

I had a great idea that maybe I could work backwards up the tree, decorating parents, nope that was VERY bad idea. gave null pointer exceptions in the eclipse internal methods
