Hi Dave,

Do you think it is possible to give an approximation for an ideal architects to developers ratio? i.e. How many architects there should be in terms of the number of developers there are on a project?
For example, some might say there should be an architect for every two teams, others might say there should be an architect for every 10 developers?
What do you think?

If you read MBA books, they usually give guidelines for managers to subordinate rations. Can similar guidelines be provided for in Software Engineering?

Luke.

Hi Luke,

The standard architectural response would be - it depends.

It depends on the overall size of the project, the complexity of the project, ...

I would tend to think of it in terms of architect to tech lead ratios.

In general, I think an architect can interact with 5 +/- 2 tech leads with each tech lead being over 5+/-2 developers.

Thank you for the question!
