Are you learning Java for the first time? If so then I would suggest you to read a good book to get familiar with the java fundamentals before you hit the KB book which is strictly written for the exam study only.

if you are familiar with java programming , then go fo K&B scjp6.0 book and complete book with question set at the end of each chapter.
then go for mock exam from practice exam book of K&B.
