I would like to start getting my certifications in Java. I do know the basics now. I was wondering if I should wait to get my certs via the se 7 exams? How long do you think it will be until the exams are finalized? It would be nice to get the certs sooner rather then later and I have ordered the McGraw-Hill book to study up. I also have access to Sun Java fundamental cd self study courses, but they are old for se 5, anyone think there maybe a problem with using the older self study materials?

Here are my options (I think):

Get SCJA
write the se 7 OCPJ when test is finalized.

Get SCJP
Upgrade to se 7 OCPJ when test is finalized.

Thanks!

Why not go for OCAJ 6 followed by OCPJP 6? When you have completed both, it's likely the exams for Java 7 will be out and you can take both upgrade exams (or just the OCPJP 7 one)

I was trying to consider the cost of taking the exams.

I see.

But as I mentioned in a similar question on the OCPJP forum: a lot of companies will use older jdk versions than 7, so having both will be more valuable to them than only passing scjp7. That's why I have scjp for jdk 1.4, 5.0 and 6.0 myself (and will take scjp 7 when it's available)

Makes sense. I will go that route then. Can you still skip the scja and do the scjp?

Take a look at this thread, it will answer your question.

Good luck!
Best wishes for 2012 (and the exams)!
