Limit Table data within the width assigned

Dear Ranchers

I have a table with 7 columns.
slno - 5%
description - 45%
unit price - 10%
quantity - 10%
tax % - 10%
total tax - 10%
total amount - 10%

the value for the description is coming from the database and some time it is bit longer than the given widh, hence it is going to the next line.

I would like to chop the data retrieving from the table and limit to the width of the <td> which is set.

How can i achieve this, please advise.
