hello all? i would like to make a networked application, without going through all the trouble of opening up my computer to the worldwide web (i want the application to be usable across networks). for example, a chat application where i could chat wit ha friend at his house from my house. my only current solution is to somehow find an online notepad website, and just write to and read from that, but that seems like a very rudimentary, makeshift solution. can anyone help? thanks in advance.

Hi All,

I'm looking for the similar stuff too. Basically, I would like to understand what are all the things that one needs to understand before developing such a chat application. Will Java alone suffice?. Please point to some useful resources in this regard.

Thanks,
Pavan.

Of course. Have a look at the Java Networking Tutorial. You probably want to concentrate on the part about sockets.

The question on where to host it gets a little more complex. The easiest thing may be to use web services to implement your application because most hosting companies are set up to handle Java web applications. You could try to find somewhere that offers a shell account that allows you to run arbitrary network services, but I would think they would be few and far between because of the potential for abuse. If you are just doing this for curiosity's sake, it may be best to host it on your own computer and just close off the route when you aren't using it.
