This week's book giveaway is in the OO, Patterns, UML and Refactoring forum. We're giving away four copies of Refactoring for Software Design Smells: Managing Technical Debt and have Girish Suryanarayana, Ganesh Samarthyam & Tushar Sharma on-line! See this thread for details.
I am currently learning Struts2 and am fascinated with websites like www.formula1.com
How do scores appear instantaneously on formula1.com and how do scores change dynamically every second?
Which programming language, portlet etc. have they used to make their website?
Can I achieve similar results with Struts2 or is there a specific portlet for making such websites the content of which changes every second?
How do such websites get their data to display? Are the scores entered manually or is there any kind of sensor that updates the scores automatically?
They seem to me like real time systems because the scores are updated so rapidly without the delay of even a second.
I agree on Ajax in general also you should consider JSR 286 ServeResource method for portlet development as well as IPC if you want changes in one portlet affecting another portlet. Also you can have WSRP for push changes.
