change text area background color at run time.

I have text area which is initially disabled on a button click i am enabling it and I am trying to change background color at run time but its not working. Can any body help me? I am doing the below:

notesJTextArea.setEditable(editable);
Color color = Color.white;
notesJTextArea.setBackground(color);
