Which do you prefer, going to a details page and seeing the information, then having to click a link to edit the data, or just when looking at the data in the first place that it is in an editable form.

Sometimes you are just there to look at the data and don't want to edit. Sometimes the user should only be able to view the data and not edit it. So what is the best practice, best user experience for this?

I am leaning towards the details page to be view only, if you click to edit it, I will pop up the form to edit that data using fancybox.

Thanks for your opinions.

I detest with a passion bordering on the pathological UIs that use forms for display.

So, then you are in the showing details text, and something to click to edit it in a popup form?

I personally like that the best too, however, going back to the old days and with spreadsheets. There are people that like to see the edit and view in one page and not have to go do extra clicks.

Like for instance, I know the data entry person adding items to an event might want to put in many items, and having to click the add button each time and the form to popup each and everytime, instead of a table with as many rows as I want and then just starting to type right into them.

Thanks

Mark
