C++ is used for a large number of applications, particularly those where performance is an issue. Bjarne Stroustrup maintains a list of major applications written in C++ here

Most commercial Java Runtime Environments (JRE) are written in C++. So, when you think you are using Java, you most likely are also using C++ and don't even realize it

While arguably true, it is also completely moot. It is not like you can claim C++ experience while working in Java....

C/C++ is still very prevalent in financial services, particularly in trading systems (and even more so, if those systems require low latency and/or high throughput).

Agreed that C++ has been used in the world class products but when we compare the job market of c++ with Java, i would say the market of c++ is small. c++ is used by technical savvy companies where performance is considered to be god. where as Java is used by millions of companies in millions of products.
