I want to confirm, if I write

it means apply the style to th, td element inside the table with class attribute equal to .detailTable, but EXCLUDE the table itself?
also, is the css type called descendent selector?

You are not correct

.detailTable th <-- match any th inside of an element that has a class detailTable
td <-- match ANY td on the page.
