So I want to build a game engine. I don't know how to begin really and want to use the experience as a learning for myself because I am not being given the oppurtunity at work to build something that could be REALLY BIG in the end.

How much help could I expect for something I'm doing by myself without knowing where to start and may seem...."academic" in nature i.e. may seem like a homework assignment eventhough it's not.

First of all, keep in mind that JavaRanch is a learning site. This is true regardless of whether it is a homework assignment or not. And you learn best when we don't give direct answers -- instead nudge you in the right direction.

Second, we are all voluteers here. So you will be expected to do the heavy lifting. Have very specific questions, and have all the details for them, and you'll be fine. IMO, You should get the help that you need -- and it will be the type of help that helps you learn.
