Can someone imagine something with my irritation about a funny colleague who is not funny? The 'I want attention' type of funniness? I don't have to laugh, I am not happy at all, but I give him attention back because otherwise I am not doing the group building stuff again.

Ok, there are bigger problems in the world, and I survive, but he is driving me a little nuts at the moment.

I suppose you can give him a book on comedy writing and timing. (If he's a tech geek you can start with http://www.amazon.com/Mathematics-Humor-Study-Logic/dp/0226650251 )

Going along just gives him positive reinforcement. If he's being obnoxious, he needs to be told so. if he's just plain not funny, just don't laugh.

No just plain not funny. I am not even that busy. It's not that I am annoyed since I have so much to do. Ah it's ok don't worry!

How about a tired smile. That should drive the point home.

Haha! That is nice David. But, actually I want people to stop talking to me without they thinking I am weird. They are my colleagues. If I am too weird, that influences my career and stuff...

On the other hand I want, at least this guy, to stop coming up with his boring jokes at stories, without him saying to the manager,'Jan only works, looks at his screen, has no contact skills, is not a team player'. I do have contact skills, with interesting girls, and I am a team player, I help other people with their work and programming problems. I just don't want to listen to boring stories from someone I have nothing in common with.

Any idea what I am saying or??

he is only one colleague to you? If you dont like just avoid him. what is the point there to talk about him? Let him say on your back .. who cares?
pretending to someone does not build healthy group...

Suggested methods:
1- Hey (With faint smile) ! I heard that joke before somewhere. Always cracks me up (To soften the blow).
2- Give him a taste of his own medicine - Change the topic. Talk stuff that makes him bored. Bore him till he cries for mercy.
3- Activate fake caller on mobile phone. Good against those who talk sh!T endlessly. But risk getting caught.
4- Laugh like you are being forced to.
5- If he makes a "joke", then make a faint smile. If someone else makes another (good) joke a little later, compliment them. That should drive the point home.

HTH. Try it and tell us what happens.

What are some of his jokes? So far we have to take your word that they're not funny.

Ah, well the first very important reason why the jokes are not funny is because he repeats them, for years. An example? We got a colleague called mister Nam. He is from Korea. There is a movie, called 'Goodmorning Vietnam' I think. Radio reporter starts with a sort of yell every morning: 'Goodmorning Vietnam'. Now my colleague was, already when I joined the company, doing a sort of same yell when Mister nam entered every morning: 'Goodmorning mister Nam'. That was two years ago. He stopped after mister Nam got transferred back to Korea. So he did that.....every bl**ding morning for two bl**ding years. One time it is funny, two, three times, I can take it. After a week, I start looking at the ceiling when he did it. And then suffered it for two bl**ding years man! May-be he even did it for a longer time, because he did it already when I joined. You think that is funny?

If he's a boss, too bad. If not, you could just say, "You already did that one."

I think a lot of us programmers have varying degrees of Asperger's Syndrome, and he sounds like one of them. He never picked up on the principle that punchlines need to be unexpected to be funny.

He very good at his job though! He is very smart with computers. Better then me even. The only thing about him is that he knows only one thing, computers, one OS, windows, and one computer language. But as long as he is that good in that one thing, I am happy with a lot of things he does too.

From my experience, nerds/brainy people are generally bad at jokes and have a hard time getting into a relationship with a member of the opposite sex, unless they are nerds too. Anyway, good luck and I hope that he does not see your post. But, maybe he should.

Dennis, sorry but what a nonsense! You're making it into something extreme. There is a difference between not willing to spend too much (free) time with colleagues that just have other interests then you and completely ignoring them. You are suggesting I am doing the latter, which I am not doing and which is not very nice of you to suggest at the least. There is also in some companies a sort of obligation that all should be close and intimate friends. No I do not play along with that, no. And I am not willing to laugh at the same joke for 2 years, just because it is good for my career.
