I am a spring beginner. What is form-backing object ? I read about command pattern, how is it associated with this? Is it conceptual/logical or is there really something called a 'Form-backing' class, if so what it does? how is it related to HttpRequest and HttpResponse ?

It binds the form data to your object so you dont have to parse all the form fields to get the values. The spring reference documenttion gives a good explanation.
