Query With a Console Class

I have one query on a statement on Console Class.Below is the Code

Console c=System.console(); //Creating Console Object
char[] pw;                             //instance variable pw
pw=c.readPassword("%s","pw:");  //confusion is in here what does the Parameter within the parenthesis mean?
