There are very few books that take one form novice to advanced in a single book. For a first book, the "Rhino" book si well-regared as wide-reaching, if a bit dry. Crockford's The Good Parts is a really good crash course.

For a second book, you might consider the MEAP for the Ninja book that John Resig and I are working on. It's most definitely not your first JavaScript book.
