I am currently using Java 5 concepts in development, yet I feel the need of getting up to date, will the book help me cover this or help me apply new java 7 concepts?

Not much changed in Java 6 language wise, so you are in the target audience.

This book will absolutely help you make the leap. There are significant improvements from Java 5 to Java 7 and you will likely find multiple features useful for your applications. There are also a few explanations throughout the book as to how and why these features evolved.
