In other words, New Message means what? New Message as of when? What on earth is No New Messages - hot or not? Is there a link the user can use to get definitions?

No, there isn't any documentation yet. I'll be more than happy to publish your contribution about that, if you would like to help

I'll be happy to write something... but first you have to answer the question. What to the terms mean? What is the difference? I can't find anything on the site that explains it.

Well, "new messages" means "new messages since your last visit / since your last page refresh". Hot topics are topics that have "n" (where "n" is defined by the admin) messages.
