I tried to search for words in the test jforum message as well and new messages I posted no results are ever returned from any search

Please look at your SystemGlobals.propertes (AND jforum-custom.conf, if you have) for the following keys:

search.indexing.enabled
search.indexer.implementation

The first should be set to "true" and the second, if set to "${search.indexer.quartz}" will tell JForum to not index messages right after being posted.
