Just curious if you've thought about integratiing an open source wysiwyg editor with Jforum. If not, is this due to difficulties with mixing code licenses, programmatic challenges, or something else? There are many nice editors out there, and it seems like it would add a lot to Jforum.

Never tried, in fact.

Which ones do you recommend?

Nice idea,

I can recommend TinyMCE, the best one I۪ve tried so far...

We did a statewide survey of our users (teachers in 30 colleges in California, US) where we gave them several open source editors to test and rate. TinyMCE came out second. Too simple for most users.

The strong winner (overwhelmingly) was FCK Editor: http://www.fckeditor.net/

Later, I found out that universities in other states had done a similar survey, and FCK Editor was the winner, again.

Not yet. It's been a big request and it's now in our Jira. That's why I wanted to check with you to see if you had explored this before we delve into the work.

We can take this on (later this spring) and share our findings and work with you. It's the least we can do for the great work you've given to our users/community!

Thanks a lot Vivie!

Version 2.1.5 is finished, and I'm going to release it tonight probably, and then I can start focusing on new features, as well on the Hibernate / Lucene branch!

Hmmm.... I don't see an implementation of this anywhere on their website. Could you direct me to the right spot? Thanks much.

You might also take a look at HTMLArea:

No, thanks, Our users whine about HTMLArea's limitations. It is currently used in 6-8 of our tools. It was the motivation for the research that led us to FCK Editor.

Hmm, the merge table cells function in fckeditor seems to be broken for IE6 (at least for me). Works great in FireFox though. The merge cells function seems to work in FireFox and IE for tinymce, though it is not that user friendly (need to type in the row/col span number vs. simply selecting the cells to span).

However, table spanning probably isn't all that important for a forum...

It turns out that JetNuke has not integrated Jforum with FCK Editor: "We have integrated FCKEditor inside JetNuke for all the editors that are not related to JForum. I have no idea how to integrate FCKEditor with JForum."

We think that we have a solution. Will post an update soon.
