Custom Search (user meta data)

Hi all, I was wondering how difficult it would be to add a serch for a 'set' of users within a forum.

For example: I would like my users to add meta data to their account (such as zipcode), then allow users to search for posts form all users within that zipcode.

To do this would I have to modify source/db-models? or is there an easier way to do this?

any pointers please??
