MVVM - what is viewModel??

Hi guys,

Im not sure if this is the right place, but it seems to fit in here than anywhere else.

Anyway, my question is what is viewModel?? It quite confusing, I would just like to confirm my understanding of it. Is it the layer that converts the Model from one format or object into another for the View to render?

Edit: sorry I meant viewModel and not model view.
