what is the meaning of ---, -a- and x--, and what is the meaning of the numbers displayed? 9, 23, etc? They are certainly not the number of elements....

I think that a little more context would be helpful. In other words, in what context are you seeing ---, a- and x--? Hopefully the context will also shed some light on the numbers you mentioned.
