EL in JSP is not interpreted at all

i'm new to J2EE.

I read in the Heads First Book about EL ... and tried to use it in a simple example jsp.
The only thing the jsp should do is ... to print the stars in a galaxy.

It seems that EL is not interpreted at all.

I use Netbeans with Glassfish.

Do I have to activate EL explicitly? How do I do that?

The most likely issue is declaring the web.xml incorrectly using the servlets 2.3 DTD. See the JspFaq for more info.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
