Hello guys,

I've read the thread (1), but there seem to be no final word on it. I've been preparing the SCJP6 from K&R for three weeks and I'm ready to go for it this week. But now there's some new certification and according to (1) is tougher though newer is usually better. Since there is no study guide for the OCP 7 yet vouchers are kinda pricey, shall all we wannabe certified programmers go for the seventh version or stick to the sixth?

This would like to be the master thread to answer this question, so some words from Bert would be nice (and conclusive).

Other points
- OCPJ7 programmer II costs 39€, a lot less
- OCPJ7 p2 requires p1, that is 238€. Can I use my SCJA 6 instead?
- SCJP6 has more material to draw from

Cheers,
Gil

That is because it is still in beta. Which means you don't get your score for many months. I took the beta. See my sig for comments/impressions.

No. SCJA 6 is a completely different exam. SCJA = OCJA. (which end of lifes with Java 6). OCJA != OCPJA

Not sure what you mean by that. In some ways yes because with Java 7, it is split into two exams. But in other ways no because with Java 7 they add whole new topics.

Note the beta ends June 9th (unless they extend it again). If you haven't started studying the new Java 7 concepts yet, this is going to be really tight for making the beta. In which case the cost between taking OCPJP6 + Java 7 upgrade is the same as waiting OCPJA7 + OCPJP7. Since you've already studied for OCPJP6, you might as well take OCPJP6 and then decide later if you want to take the upgrade.
